Unfortunately, I will not be with you all this Lord’s Day as I will be away with my family on vacation. I will miss leading worship for you but AU student, Kyle Wherry and the FPO Worship Team, have all very graciously given of their time to fill in for me. You will certainly be led well by these dear people who give so freely of their time and talents. I will miss being in your presence but will see you all next Sunday, June 23rd. Much grace and peace to you and may this blog help you “Prepare to Rejoice in Him”.

Yours for the faith with much love and affection,
Shane Martin, Worship Director

Scripture: II Samuel 6

Sermon: The Reign of the King: Death and Dancing

Sermon Notes: The sermon this week is about David bringing the ark into Jerusalem.  On the first attempt, the people do not carry the ark correctly, and as a result Uzzah is struck dead by God.  Then, they do bring it in correctly, David dances and celebrates, and Michal judges him for it. What’s the point? The point is the king’s responsibility is to rightly handle and mediate the presence of God for the people.  Below are some points to meditate and think on as we prepare our hearts to hear the preached word.
  1. The Ark of God’s Presence - What is the ark?  Why do they need to bring it to Jerusalem?
  2. The Danger of God’s Presence - verses 1-11; the danger of “handling” God according to our own estimations of what seems right and proper and pragmatic to us vs. according to the rules he puts forth in his Word.
  3. The Joy of God’s Presence - verses 12-23; the joy of God dwelling in the midst of his people; the danger of neglecting that for the sake of propriety.
  4. The Mediator of God’s presence – Jesus.  We see in the chapter that the great (and serious) responsibility of the king is to bring the presence of God rightly before the people in the way that God requires.  Jesus is the King who does this.  His incarnation, life, death, resurrection and ascension is the perfect fulfillment of what is happening here – the presence of God being brought into the people, in the way that the Father requires.  Everything that the ark symbolizes, Jesus is. In all of its mystery and rough edges, the death of Christ glorifies the perfection of Christ’s work.  If the presence of God is so serious and dangerous a thing as we see here, yet now all those who are in Christ are the temples of God’s Spirit, then how purifying, how cleansing, how perfect a sacrifice must have been the death that opened the door for that!  How sufficient is his death!
  5. The Mandate of God’s Presence, mediated rightly in Christ: Fear (Christ does not tame God – we still have the fear that is due for such holiness) AND Celebration (that such power could be in our midst…that such a God makes his hime with us).  There is a name for this awe-filled celebration – worship.

DECLARATION OF FAITH

Westminster Shorter Catechism, Question 100

Q. 100. What does the preface of the Lord’s Prayer teach us?

A. The preface of the Lord’s Prayer, which is, Our Father which art in heaven, teaches us to draw near to God with all holy reverence and confidence, as children to a father, able and ready to help us; and that we should pray with and for others.

The-Lords-Supper

We will come to the Table this Sunday to feast with our Lord; Christ, himself, invites us to come and sit with him. What makes this time so special from any other day in worship? It’s special because even though we are sinners, beggars, idolaters and rebels a King sets the table and makes a place for us – filth and all – and is pleased to dine with us, his family. Read these words from John Calvin’s Short Treatise on the Lords’ Supper to help you better prepare for this coming Sunday.

“Here, then, is the singular consolation which we derive from the Supper. It directs and leads us to the cross of Jesus Christ and to his resurrection, to certify us that whatever iniquity there may be in us, the Lord nevertheless recognises and accepts us as righteous—whatever materials of death may be in us, he nevertheless gives us life— whatever misery, may be in us, he nevertheless fills us with all felicity. Or to explain the matter more simply—as in ourselves we are devoid of all good, and have not one particle of what might help to procure salvation, the Supper is an attestation that, having been made partakers of the death and passion of Jesus Christ, we have every thing that is useful and salutary to us.”

DECLARATION OF FAITH

The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried.

He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy *catholic church, The communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*The word “catholic” refers not to the Roman Catholic Church, but to the universal church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

*When saying “He descended into hell” it is not saying that Christ literally went into hell. It is expressing our belief that Christ died a physical death, was buried in a tomb and underwent the spiritual torment of all of God’s wrath on our behalf.

Below is a very good excerpt from John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion concerning the phrase “He descended into hell”.

THE “DESCENT INTO HELL” AS AN EXPRESSION OF THE SPIRITUAL TORMENT THAT CHRIST UNDERWENT FOR US

But we must seek a surer explanation, apart from the Creed, of Christ’s descent into hell. The explanation given to us in God’s Word is not only holy and pious, but also full of wonderful consolation. If Christ had died only a bodily death, it would have been ineffectual. No — it was expedient at the same time for him to undergo the severity of God’s vengeance, to appease his wrath and satisfy his just judgment. For this reason, he must also grapple hand to hand with the armies of hell and the dread of everlasting death…“the chastisement of our peace was laid upon him,” “he was wounded for our transgressions” by the Father, “he was bruised for our infirmities”. By these words he means that Christ was put in place of evildoers as surety and pledge — submitting himself even as the accused — to bear and suffer all the punishments that they ought to have sustained. All — with this one exception: “He could not be held by the pangs of death”. No wonder, then, if he is said to have descended into hell, for he suffered the death that, God in his wrath had inflicted upon the wicked!…The point is that the Creed sets forth what Christ suffered in the sight of men, and then appositely speaks of that invisible and incomprehensible judgment which he underwent in the sight of God in order that we might know not only that Christ’s body was given as the price of our redemption, but that he paid a greater and more excellent price in suffering in his soul the terrible torments of a condemned and forsaken man.

GUIDE TO WORSHIP

Tax collectors were among the most reviled people in Jesus’ day because of the corruption associated with the office. Matthew, the Apostle, was one of these. Matthew was free to assess the value of the goods carried through his region and, like other collectors, demanded a tax higher than what the government required and kept the difference for himself. Now, we see why people hated tax collectors so much.

Galilee also viewed the tax collectors as traitors, because they were representatives of Rome’s oppressive government. Matthew went by the name Levi, making it likely that he was a Levite (Luke 5:27–28). According to the Pharisees, this would make his cooperation with Rome much worse because God set apart the Levites for Himself (Num. 8:5–22), not service to the pagans. It is easy to see why the Pharisees were upset when Jesus called Matthew as His disciple and then dined with him and other sinners (Matt. 9:10–11; Luke 5:29–30). Eating a meal with someone in the first century shows relational intimacy, and our Savior reveals His love for tax collectors and others deemed beyond forgiveness when He dines with them.

Let us not forget we are all recovering Pharisees who must get over our tendency to frown only upon certain sins. John Calvin comments that we must “never think it strange that He should gather to salvation those who have been the worst of men, and who have been covered with a mass of crimes.” We, the church, must welcome repentant abusers, repentant homosexuals, and others often seen as beyond God’s forgiveness. We deserve His pardon no more than they do. Jesus! What a Friend for Sinners.

DECLARATION OF FAITH

Westminster Shorter Catechism: Questions 88-90

Q. 88. What are the outward and ordinary means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of redemption?
A. The outward and ordinary means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of redemption are, his ordinances, especially the Word, sacraments, and prayer; all which are made effectual to the elect for salvation.

Q. 89. How is the Word made effectual to salvation?
A. The Spirit of God makes the reading, but especially the preaching, of the Word, an effectual means of convincing and converting sinners, and of building them up in holiness and comfort, through faith, unto salvation.

Q. 90. How is the Word to be read and heard, that it may become effectual to salvation?
A. That the Word may become effectual to salvation, we must attend thereunto with diligence, preparation, and prayer; receive it with faith and love, lay it up in our hearts, and practice it in our lives.

GUIDE TO WORSHIP

“But the order of the process to destroy doubt is crucial. For example, the miracles of the Bible cannot and were never designed to prove the existence of God. The very possibility of a miracle requires that there first be a God who can empower it. In other words, it is not the Bible that proves the existence of God, it is God who through miracle attests that the Bible is His word. Thus proven, to believe the Bible implicitly is a virtue. To believe it gratuitously is not.”

DECLARATION OF FAITH

Westminster Shorter Catechism: Questions 86-87

Q. 86. What is faith in Jesus Christ?
A. Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace, whereby we receive and rest upon him alone for salvation, as he is offered to us in the gospel.

Q. 87. What is repentance unto life?
A. Repentance unto life is a saving grace, whereby a sinner, out of a true sense of his sin, and apprehension of the mercy of God in Christ, doth, with grief and hatred of his sin, turn from it unto God, with full purpose of, and endeavor after, new obedience.

GUIDE TO WORSHIP

The Westminster Confession of Faith: Of God’s Eternal Decree

I. God from all eternity, did, by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely, and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass; yet so, as thereby neither is God the author of sin, nor is violence offered to the will of the creatures; nor is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather established.

II. Although God knows whatsoever may or can come to pass upon all supposed conditions; yet has He not decreed anything because He foresaw it as future, or as that which would come to pass upon such conditions.

III. By the decree of God, for the manifestation of His glory, some men and angels are predestinated unto everlasting life; and others foreordained to everlasting death.

VIII. The doctrine of this high mystery of predestination is to be handled with special prudence and care,[18] that men, attending the will of God revealed in His Word, and yielding obedience thereunto, may, from the certainty of their effectual vocation, be assured of their eternal election. So shall this doctrine afford matter of praise, reverence, and admiration of God; and of humility, diligence, and abundant consolation to all that sincerely obey the Gospel.

DECLARATION OF FAITH

Westminster Shorter Catechism, Questions: 82-85

Q. 82. Is any man able perfectly to keep the commandments of God?
A. No mere man, since the fall, is able in this life perfectly to keep the commandments of God, but doth daily break them in thought, word, and deed.

Q. 83. Are all transgressions of the law equally heinous?
A. Some sins in themselves, and by reason of several aggravations, are more heinous in the sight of God than others.

Q. 84. What doth every sin deserve?
A. Every sin deserves God’s wrath and curse, both in this life, and that which is to come.

Q. 85. What doth God require of us, that we may escape his wrath and curse, due to us for sin?
A. To escape the wrath and curse of God, due to us for sin, God requires of us faith in Jesus Christ, repentance unto life, with the diligent use of all the outward means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of redemption.

Westminster Confession of Faith: Chapter XVII

Of the Perseverance of the Saints

I. They, whom God has accepted in His Beloved, effectually called, and sanctified by His Spirit, can neither totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace, but shall certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eternally saved.

II. This perseverance of the saints depends not upon their own free will, but upon the immutability of the decree of election, flowing from the free and unchangeable love of God the Father; upon the efficacy of the merit and intercession of Jesus Christ, the abiding of the Spirit, and of the seed of God within them, and the nature of the covenant of grace: from all which arises also the certainty and infallibility thereof.
